Chapter going through growing pains of the best kind

Fall is all about change, and that is one thing the WA Beta Chapter experienced when school began. The 2010 fall quarter has turned out to be a significantly different experience for the chapter than last fall quarter.    Instead of a house of about 50 members coming back arguing over who has the most points to move in to the best rooms, there are now almost 75 men, and the facility is completely full.

Over the summer, the recruitment team utilized a recruitment tool called the Balanced Man Scholarship to achieve their goals. They had 300 applicants and conducted almost 150 interviews of the top applicants. At the end of summer, the recruitment team, along with the help of the entire chapter, recruited over 30 members. This was amongst the top 5 on campus. In addition, the chapter finished first in GPA last year with close to a 3.5 GPA (topping all sororities and fraternities - a historic first for any fraternity at the UW), which truly puts SigEp back into the mix as a top contender on campus.

With this growth, there were suddenly issues that WA Beta has not had to address in a long time, including house capacity, bed requirements, live outs, etc. These are all great problems that are now in discussion every month. If you attended this year’s Salmon Bake, you may have noticed all the new bunk beds that were purchased to accommodate the new members.

Speaking of Salmon Bake, THANK YOU, to everyone who attended and was generous enough to give back to the chapter.    Even just showing up was greatly appreciated. Without your continued support, SigEp would not be where it is today. Giving back your time to volunteer was also celebrated at this year’s Salmon Bake. We recognized three individuals as distinguished volunteers. Steve Ruttner for over 30 years of service, and Eric Lord and Jon Bruch for over 10 years of service. This award will be placed in the Alumni room and will continue to be awarded as warranted each year at the Salmon Bake.

It is an exciting time at WA Beta, and as always, if you are interested in getting involved, please don’t hesitate to stop by the chapter, email any of us, or get connected with us on facebook!
